PRESTON, EMMA J., 90, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Leroy Preston; 3 children, Carol (Milton) Aaron, Deidre Simpson and Edward Farmer; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grand children and 2 great- great grandchildren. A native of Louisville, KY, where he attended Jefferson County Public Schools and resided until his relocation in 1988. Wednesday, November 16th, 2011Walker, Angela Sudderth– born September 16, 1960, went home to be with her Lord Savior on November 16, 2011. Angela was a graduate of Austin East High School, Class of 1978. She was a loving and giving person especially of her time. Angela loved her role as mentor at Eagle’s Nest Recovery Center. It is where she will be remembered for her laughter and genuine care for others. Preceded in death by parents, Mary “Liz” and Frank Sudderth, Sr., grandmothers, Pauline Sudderth and Mary Isom, uncle, Billy Bryant and aunt, Alice Sudderth. She leaves to cherish her memory: husband, Clem; sisters: Pamela, Roberta and Andrea Sudderth; brother, Frank (Ellen) Sudderth, Jr.; 3 nieces; 1 nephew; 2 great nephews and a host of other relatives and friends to include devoted friends, Diane and Becky. Wilma Doris Billingsley Brunson
Friday, November 11th, 2011Brunson, Wilma Doris Billingsley– sunset November 11, 2011. “I will sing to the Lord for He has been good to me.” Psalms 13:6. Doris quietly left this earthly journey after a lengthy illness. She was born to the union of Erma Wilson and William Billingsley on September 30, 1933 in Blount County. She spent her childhood and early school days on the family farm on Pea Ridge Road in the Pea Ridge Community. Doris attended Knoxville City Schools, graduating from Austin High School, Class of 1951. Doris’ life was filled with abundant love for her family, friends, neighbors and dearest classmates. The church was especially dear to her as well, being a founding member of the Betty Allyne Circle involving Christian Education and Sunday Morning Worship at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church. We pray this Lord’s Day on deep thanksgiving.
Preceded in death by her husband of over 40 years, Joseph Hoover Brunson, parents, William Billingsley and Erma Wilson (Robert Cecil) Waters, brothers, Clifford and Wilford Billingsley and Robert Gregory Waters, grandson, Travis Brunson and dear friends, Dorothy Whitelaw and Delores Alford.
She is survived by her daughter, Mildred ‘Missy” Brunson; two devoted grandchildren, Jordan Brunson and Jeremy Simmons; brother, Kent A. (Vicki) Waters; sisters: Mildred B. Kelso, Cecelia J. Waters and Helen Ruth B. Reynolds of Riverside, CA; 12 nieces of Knoxville, Ohio and California; 6 nephews of Knoxville, Oak Ridge and Ohio; great nieces and nephews; a host of other relatives and friends to include special friends, Alma (Tommy) Moore of Florida, Bessie Jeanette Dennis and the Walter P. William Edward Harper
Wednesday, November 9th, 2011Harper William Edward “Pee-Wee”- age 53, passed away November 9, 2011 at Hillcrest North Nursing Home. He was a graduate of Austin East High School, Class of 1975. William was employed as a tailor at Sears and later worked at the Lunch House and Ideal Cleaners, until his health began to decline. He was well known throughout the Burlington Community.
Preceded in death by mother, Carrie Harper and brother Willie J. Harper, Jr. He leaves to mourn his passing: father, Willie J. Harper, Sr.; devoted and loving caregiver and sister, Charlotte D. Moore; sisters, Stephanie Lenoir and Petrina L. Williams; brother, Michael (Glenda) Andrews; sister-in-law: Gloria A. Harper, all of Knoxville; a host of relatives and friends. Tuesday, November 8th, 2011Washington, Calvin Earl “C-Dog”- departed this life on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 comfortably at home with his family. He was born in Knoxville, TN on May 29, 1958 to Melvin Johnson and Margaret Washington. He attended Austin High School and was a member of New Salem Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Joan Joyce “Big Sis” Davis and cousin, BG Washington (New York). He leaves to cherish his memory: loving wife, Margaret; daughter, Devona Wilder (Matthew Johnson); son, Calvin Washington; 5 grandchildren: Victor Harris, Mahala Johnson, Calvin Washington, Ma’Kynzee and Ma’Laun Johnson; a host of devoted nephews, nieces and cousins too numerous to name. Special love to LaWanda Hines, Vivian (Robert) Holland, Jamesena Davis and special thanks to UT Hospice. She was a member of Community Evangelistic Evangelical Presbyterian Church (CEC). Preceded in death by husband, Thomas A. Colbert, daughter, Janice L. Matthews, parents, Zack and Willie Mae (Harris) Rodgers, Sr. and brother, S. Paul Rodgers.
Survived by: sisters, Louella Crump and Willie J. Wagoner; brothers: William (Roxie) and Truman (Gloria) Rodgers; sisters-in-law: Angelita and Vernia; brother-in-law, L.V.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to include: Barbara Whittington, Rosa Chappell, Willie Mae Cutwright and Susie Brooks. Alex J. Houston, Jr.
Monday, October 31st, 2011Houston, Jr., Alex J. “Brother” – age 61, of Knoxville, went to be with our Heavenly Savior on Monday, October 31, 2011. Preceded in death by father Alex J. Houston, Sr., sister, Barbara (Houston) Upton, brothers, David and John Houston; nephews, David and Michael Houston.
Alex graduated from Austin High School in 1968. He was an U.S Army Veteran served in Vietnam and served for 17 years as a U.S. Army Reserve. While in Vietnam, he dedicated his life for protecting our country. He was also a faithful employee by the City of Knoxville Garage for many years.
Alex Jr. leaves to mourn his passing: children: Reggie, Alex III (Ahbani) of OH, Maurice and Tiffany Houston, former wife and children’s mother, Francine (Stinson) King; 12 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; mother, Paula Houston; siblings Ray, Fannie Jo Houston and Judy (Bill) McCoy; a host of other relatives and friends. On Monday, November 7, 2011, the family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with the funeral to follow at the Unity Mortuary Chapel. Pastor David Upton officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, John Sevier Highway. The service will conclude with full military honors and doves will be released.
Annie Lue Crutcher
Monday, October 31st, 2011Crutcher, Annie Lue– peacefully departed this life on Sunday, October 30, 2011. She was born May 24, 1925 to the union of Carrie and Albert Turman, Sr. in McCormick County,SC. Mrs. Crutcher was a devoted member and Mother of Victory View Baptist Church for over 60 years. She provided dedicated community service through Eastern Star and NAACP organizations. She was a licensed insurance agent and possessed a degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She was employed by Union Protective for a number of years and retired from Universal Insurance Company.
Mrs. Crutcher was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Percy (departed 1996), parents and brothers: James, Teet, Albert, Jr. and Otis Turman. Left to mourn her passing and cherish her memory are daughters, Alice Crutcher of Knoxville and Sharon Okoye of CT; four grandchildren: Tameka and Anthony Flack, Jr. of Knoxville, Anita Okoye of CT and Kenisha (Bradley) Sanderson of KS; 3 great grandchildren: siblings: Drucilla (Junior) Thomas, Shirley Kennedy, Louise Brown, Catherine and Bessie (James) Cade, Charlena Anderson, DaisyBell McCier, Louis (May Lee) Turman and Oralee, all of SC, Geneva (Jack) Madison and Melvin (Delores) Turman, both of CT; a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2011 at Unity Mortuary Chapel. The funeral will immediately follow, officiated by Reverend Dexter Jordan.
